“They’re very good,” he said of the film’s Academy prospects. “Absolutely, it will be in the running.
“The film deserves the reception it is getting,” he continued. “It goes beyond the boundaries of the genre. Joaquin Phoenix’s performance is outstanding and Todd Phillips did a great job.”
According to Variety, the Todd Phillips-directed comic book adaptation received an eight-minute standing ovation from the audience at the Italian Film Festival, along with widespread critical acclaim, as initial reviews and impressions have been overwhelmingly positive.
The official synopsis for Joker promises that Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, a man disregarded by society, will not only serve as “a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale,” a concept also teased in an earlier trailer.
In our 10/10 review of Joker, we called the DC origin movie “a masterpiece”, praising Phillips’ “masterful albeit loose reinvention of the DC source material” and Phoenix’s “fully committed performance” as the Gotham City super-villain.
